) is a non-endangered fish with both recreational and commercial fishing seasons.
The title of this work is “Pirate Ship & Mermaid”.  The scene depicts a mermaid on shore looking out at a pirate ship at sea.  Seagulls are shown flying overhead.  The artist signed the piece at the bottom of the front side.  The back side also has the artist’s signature, along with the title of the piece and the year it was created (2021).
This swordfish bill is made of bone and was harvested from locally caught swordfish off the coast of the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  It’s medium sized and measures about 31 3/4″ in length.  The bill was sanded to a smooth surface, hand-decorated with pen and ink, then finished with polyurethane.  It has the look of antique scrimshaw pieces, but is not etched like true scrimshaw.  The bone has some natural discoloration caused by oils that provides a nice patina.  The bill is ready to be displayed and has a fishing line hanger already attached.
Bob Turney is an Outer Banks artist who resides in Manteo, North Carolina.  He sells his works locally, but has never offered his artwork online, until now.  I will be listing several of his decorated swordfish bills in the upcoming weeks.  Each is a unique work of art.
Condition of this swordfish bill artwork is EXCELLENT.  It looks fantastic and displays beautifully.  There is some normal splitting of the base on the back side (the top side on the fish) where it was detached from the skull.  Please take a close look at the many photos I’ve provided and judge condition for yourself.  I’m confident you’ll be very pleased with this purchase.
